Inspiration

Thoughts about strengths and weaknesses today.  And of course the motivation to start the year on a good note...a day that is usually filled with resolutions.  Its a good day...and a tough day.  Because you often have to stare at your short comings and realize you have so far to go....so the desire to be better, to work harder, love more sweetly and live more fully hits me pretty hard January 1st.  Every year...with out fail.
So, every year, I have a tradition to take at least one photo today...to begin my year composing something just for me.
I decided to go hike into to this place that I have been curious about as a location...I'm always looking for that magic spot for me and my clients.  And sadly this spot will not do.  But I still loved the search, the soft colors from the late afternoon sun and the moment to be alone and think through the thoughts I listed above.

Just a fun quote...I found it on Pinterest.
And lastly, the photo from today...just for me...a bit moody filled with the sweet sunshine that I love.  Happy New Year peeps...I'm excited about the challenges, blessings and the sweet new beginning of a new year.

Thoughts...and a big shout out, possibly long winded letter of thankfulness to my peeps!

Can I be transparent?  I've been thinking a lot about my business these past few weeks... January 1st is right around the corner...and I usually try and think deep thoughts regarding where I want my business to go, comparing last year with this year and so forth, yes deep thoughts.  ;p

But I was thinking about  the fear...oh, and yes, its still there.  But the fear of failure in particular in the beginning.  I was so passionate, I still am but I remember the drive to take every kind of photo I could.  Calling up my friends and setting up sessions...shooting landscapes.  I even posted info about my business on Craigslist.  Yes, you read that right, I offered shoots on craigslist.  And my first ever client is still with me from those days.  Lets just say I got lucky...

A long the way, I had lots of different advise.  "You should work for free until you have the experience" or "it probably won't turn into anything" or "are you sure you should attempt something so big "(my first wedding) yes, people said this and I'm still not sure how its advise.   Protection maybe, for maybe they also fear failure.  You know, for me though...it was kind of like a challenge.  Yes, I'm very competitive.  I wanted to prove to myself and to anyone giving me that kind of advise that I could.

But can I just say, that overall, I've had overwhelming amounts of encouragement.  One of the biggest acts of encouragement from a client is a referral.  Yes, when a new client calls me up and tells me they LOVED their friends photos and would love to set something up with me...it tells me I'm doing something right.   Not only that, but I feel like I'm starting with a client on a familiar basis.  The reason my business is where it is today is because of you.  And the YOU being all of my clients, friends and family who have loved their photos and told their friends and family about it.  Facebook, pictures on your wall...conversations...whatever or however it was done put me in business.  I don't advertise for that reason.  And that has been what is on my mind...yes, seeing clients every year come back.  Makes me smile and want to hug them...because so many of them have become my friends and their friends are becoming my clients.  So it kind of feels like one big happy family.  Okay, so that was cheesy but its true.  I feel an overwhelming sense of gratefulness to all of you.  Being a small business owner and a woman, you've allowed me to make a small niche in the world.  And I'm so thankful for that.  Because photography brings me so much joy.

Opposing sides of advise, it made me one second full of confidence and the next full of insecurities.  SO many conversations with my sounding board team...okay, so I don't really call them that.  But the people I turn to, I know without a doubt are going to challenge me, love me and pick me back up and tell me to try again.

This is where my family and close friends come in...yes, I am one loved girl.  I grew up in a family where my parents made us feel like rock stars.  Literally, YOU CAN DO IT was a motto my parents instilled in my brain.  I'm talking dreaming big dreams and putting a plan in place and it will happen.  Sort of like that movie, "if you build it they will come"  So makes me laugh and I have to whisper it every time I say it.
But work hard and the results will show.  Because of that its also in my sisters and my brother.  When I first started out,  they helped set me up with a camera and the most beautiful lens ever.  They believed in me and wanted to show that.  The sweetest words of encouragement from each and everyone of them...and they continue to do so.  I'm talking if I'm having a bad day they are on the phone in 2 seconds to figure out how to fix it.  I guess its the little sister syndrome...even though I'm older than my brother too he secretly thinks of me as his little sister.  ;p  I can be crying, hiccuping with sobs or laughing hysterically or angry and ready to change the world and they all take it and shape it into something a little more reasonable.  And my sweet precious girlfriends, my soul friend and the support and love.  I take what I do pretty seriously.  And without that foundation of support, the challenge to be better not just in photography but in life in general, well, I definitely would not be where I am right now without them.  So sounding board...yes, I think it fits.

Encouragement and support is something you have to mentally choose to do for someone.  Yes, I'm not sure it comes naturally to most.  Because there is that fear of being over the top, of not having your encouragement being appreciated or just being afraid you look cheesy.  Yes, I sound like I know what I'm talking about...because I do.  Have those fears I mean.  But the most precious moments for me are when someone took those steps to go out of their way and say sweet and strong words of support to me.  I value it...cherish it and feel inclined to do that for others because of that.   So this is my over the top, make you cringe letter of thankfulness.  Know that I'm thinking of you, feeling super thankful for how you have effected my life.  Many of you will probably say, oh its just photography.  But to me, its a business...my business, its a dream to do what I do and I don't take lightly any measure of success that I've had so far.

So thank you...and I'm so hoping this season, brings you closer to your friends and family.  Merry Christmas sweet friends, clients and family.

Flowers...because, just because

Pleasure - By Charlotte Bronte
A Short Poem or Else Not Say I

True pleasure breathes not city air,
Nor in Art's temples dwells,
In palaces and towers where
The voice of Grandeur dwells.

No! Seek it where high Nature holds
Her court 'mid stately groves,
Where she her majesty unfolds,
And in fresh beauty moves;

Where thousand birds of sweetest song,
The wildly rushing storm
And hundred streams which glide along,
Her mighty concert form!

Go where the woods in beauty sleep
Bathed in pale Luna's light,
Or where among their branches sweep
The hollow sounds of night.

Go where the warbling nightingale
In gushes rich doth sing,
Till all the lonely, quiet vale
With melody doth ring.

Go, sit upon a mountain steep,
And view the prospect round;
The hills and vales, the valley's sweep,
The far horizon bound.

Then view the wide sky overhead,
The still, deep vault of blue,
The sun which golden light doth shed,
The clouds of pearly hue.

And as you gaze on this vast scene
Your thoughts will journey far,
Though hundred years should roll between
On Time's swift-passing car.

To ages when the earth was yound,
When patriarchs, grey and old,
The praises of their god oft sung,
And oft his mercies told.

You see them with their beards of snow,
Their robes of ample form,
Their lives whose peaceful, gentle flow,
Felt seldom passion's storm.

Then a calm, solemn pleasure steals
Into your inmost mind;
A quiet aura your spirit feels,
A softened stillness kind.

She says it so much better than I could...but flowers, mountains, the sea...they simply make me happy.  Enjoy some pics of my garden...

Lightning, Thunder and the rain....

Colorado in July.
What can you expect?

Dark dramatic clouds.  Rain storms so big that you get a touch nervous watching them come in.  And yes, I watch them.  I feel so small.  And I often just stand in awe at nature just taking over.  The storms here are rarely the soft gentle rain...its more like fierce blowing winds, loud thunder and wow the lightning...its amazing.  Not to mention the annoying habit of crazy hail and the flash floods that happen quite rapidly around here.

My fascination with stroms began with my Dad.  We used to live in a house where we made a garage a room.  And this was really just the coolest thing ever for all of us.  We would roll up the garage door and watch the storms.  My dad would tell me to count the seconds between the thunder and the lightning and that was how close the storm was.  I would snuggle into him and enjoy every minute of those storms.  Counting together.... and that was often our big entertainment for the evening.  And to be honest...I don't think you can top a thunderstorm.  They are just too cool.

So the other night, I got rained out for a photo session...but I really didn't want to miss out on snapping a few photos from my deck.  If you look closely in the first shot you can see Garden of the Gods in the lower corner.  Pretty cool...and for those of you that don't live in Colorado Springs...that mountain is Pikes Peak.

Orange

So remember how I said photography...how I need it to be for me.  Well, this time I was thinking about my front room and how it needs something...I'm thinking orange.  :)  A color I don't often think of but for some reason makes me happy when I do.  In my backyard I have a wild flower garden that has a few bright orange poppies.  Love them.  Did I mention before that flowers make me happy...yes, yes, I have. Especially the flowers in my backyard.  Happy memories of planting various flowers with my mom.  So, today, I'm just enjoying the various colors in the world but in particular orange.  ;p

Perspective....

So, hmm, how to begin.  Yesterday, was a tough day.  Some moments in your life you just don't see coming.  Life moves on and you realize everything happens for a reason.  Or atleast, I usually get to that point.  What I realized yesterday is...photography, when its just for me...for me to see and just be quite...well, I'm at peace.  I haven't just gone out with my camera, for me, in a while.  And for that, I realized, I can't do that.  I need this.  I need moments to myself.  So that I can get my thoughts and emotions clear. And yesterday was great also in some ways because my husband looked at me and told me he was proud of me, proud of where I'm going and the things I see and can capture.  Ah, moments like that just melt my heart...and so the perspective comes in and I see that hey, life moves on and yeah, I'll be fine.  So, enjoy my quite moment yesterday...it was really for me but I do like to share. ;p

Sunsets, mountains and a sweet, sweet family...

Photography...wow, I feel blessed to do this job.  This past week I was able to hang out with an adorable family.  The two girls had so much energy and LOVED running around, climbing trees...and showing me their latest model poses.  Yes, they came prepared for their photo shoot.  What I loved particularly about them is their openness to me...their eyes...and I really really really loved their freckles across the brige of their noses.  Hey, I'm just saying...ADORABLE.  And their Mom...I felt like I was hanging out with one of my friends.  So easy going and it was obvious the support and love she provides for her babies.  I really enjoyed exploring this new location that she picked out...and yes, it just might be my favorite new one.  Huge fields of grass, big older trees...the sweeping mountains...okay I'm getting carried away but its beautiful.  I really had such a lovely time during this session.  Thank you so much!

Fathers Day...

Kreatid and I have been working together to create a look for my Fathers Day Flyer...something that said professional, chic and fun...Hmmm, I think she hit the nail on the head with this one.  Fun for me to see the creative side to design come alive.  Thanks so much for your help Kreatid
So, I've decided to change around my pricing.  I wanted to offer packages that hit most families needs (mine as well...) and wants when it comes to photography. So I am now offering three different package prices for my photography sessions.
And PS, as the flyer states book before June 15th and everyone gets an 8 x 10 with their package!  Looking forward to your next photography session!

Stop and just be...

Sunsets...its the days way of saying...put up your feet and relax.  Take a moment and observe...being visually aware, I think to really observe you need to just be quite and be.  Sounds weird I guess.  But last nights sunset was breathtaking.  It was foggy and the sun was competing for the show...but it was so amazing how it broke through behind the clouds.  Kissed everything it touched...beautiful.  And whats amazing about a sunset...everyday we can observe this...each sunset more unique than the last...if we would only take a moment to observe.  To stop and just be...so I guess this post is a reminder to do just that.

Sunflowers...an old highschool favorite...

okay, I'm going to admit something...when I was in highschool...I was probably a freshman, I went through this moment where I loved sunflowers.  I mean I just liked the flower.  Then all of a sudden, birthday's and christmas's I was receiving sunflower gifts from anyone who knew me.  So my room had a sunflower border, sunflower's in a vase, a sunflower bedspread, a sunflower poster...a mug, pencils, notebooks, envelopes...and last but not least, I received a sunflower vest.  Yes, yes, I did.  But I swear, these were gifts to me...I did not go and buy these items for myself.  So whenever anyone would come over they would say WOW this girl loves her sunflower theme.  AUGHHHHH...I couldn't get away from it...but at the heart of it, I still love that darn sunflower.  Its so pretty and cheerful and reminds me of sunshine.  What more can you ask for in a flower...makes me happy.  So enjoy the flowers...and don't you dare think of me in that sunflower vest... :)

City love...

So, I've lived in Colorado for about 9 years...and I admit there are some places that I just always go to.  But today...I went out and enjoyed some new scenery with one of my closest friends.  I love old buildings, brick walls, lamp posts that could have been out of an old black and white movie...come on you know the kind, random displays of art...basically, character.  Or charm would be another good word.  One of a kind restaurants, boutiques...things or places that are remarkable.  While my friend and I are enjoying the fabulous city life of Colorado Springs, our kids are running up and down the sidewalk, pressing their faces against glass windows (I'm sure to the shop owners dismay), giggling about who knows what and really just enjoying being what they are...kids with no other agenda except to enjoy being.  What a lovely reminder.  So here is my day with my babies and an amazing friend of mine.
